Heidelberger Herbst 2009

The end blows nearer
A leaf clings precariously
Let go to let live

Sehr schn.

All Foodies out there! Read, read, read!

Just like Gabe in Next to Normal, yes I'm Alive.

To those whom I promised updates every now and then, I for my laziness to post pics and write. I hope to do so really soon!

At the moment, I'd like to advertise our food blog once again, The PhooD.Journal

I wrote about it in a previous entry before and since then our readership has grown significantly. There are five Phoodies right now: myself, Kookie and Janet (in Saarbrcken), Oui (in Leuven), and Dom (in Ithaca). Do take the time to read the articles and try out the recipes for yourselves. And comment, comment, comment!

I'll be posting more of my recipes real soon, Asian BBQ Pasta included, so watch out!

Here are some of the articles:

GLEE finally continues

After months of waiting, the premiere season of the FOX musical-comedy GLEE has continued with the release of the second episode.

GLEE follows the story of a struggling glee club that needs to prove itself to the school community. Reading about the plot in different sites, one may think the show is a serialized High School Musical, but it really isn't. There's some tongue-in-cheek humor and wit in there that, combined with some interesting arrangements of well-known songs, makes for a highly entertaining program. Fun watch, especially if you've ever performed with a choral or theatrical group before.

For theater-fans, expect to see some cameos and performances by well-known Broadway artists this season.

Here are two videos from the Pilot and a rendition of "Take a Bow" by Lea Michelle of Spring Awakening fame. Magaling talaga si Lea! She topples Rihanna's version, in my opinion.

More from Shrek the Musical

I wrote about this production before here.

Here are some two videos with highlights of the show and two more of Fiona's songs (Sutton Foster). Panalo talaga ang numbers niya. The first one is, for me, the best song in the show.

I'm a [tos]er

Listening to the [title of show] soundtrack just brightens my day. The production and the cast are already hilarious, but getting all the other theatrical references makes it even better.

[title of show] was an entry to the 2004 NY Musical Theater Festival. It's a musical about writing the musical the audience is watching. (Or the theater festival entry about their theater festival entry). It has one of the wittiest books ever and a very catchy score. The writers/actors play their real selves preparing the musical [title of show]. The cast: two guys, two girls, and a pianist. The set: four chairs and a keyboard.

It finally fulfilled its dream of moving to Broadway mid-2008 but closed last October. They even chronicled this on their blog and YouTube page. (If you're a Broadwayphile, watch their videos and catch all the cameos.)

Here's a fun video explaining everything:

Here's a Broadwayworld feature:

My favorite song in the show: "A Way Back to Then"

Favorite characters: Heidi and Susan singing "Secondary Characters"

"Two Nobodies in New York" Montage

"Nine People's Favorite Thing"

25th Putnam County Spelling Bee

I became familiar with the soundtrack of this production before I knew of its plot or even saw any videos online. I wasn't mad about the show until I began reading parts of the script and watching videos online. Then in 2007, BlueRep staged it and I became a fan of the material (and the organization).

To those unfamiliar with the show, it's simply a spelling bee where you get to know the lives of the contestants as they compete. The fourth wall is broken, which makes the experience of even more enjoyable. The show progresses as we learn the backgrounds, motivations, and dreams of the six main spellers. Think "A Chrous Line", but with kids' concerns that vary in depth: being liked, having unfortunate erections, dealing with parental pressure, living with broken families. The show draws its charm from its spontaneity in interacting with the audience. Laughs come with when the cast deals with the four guest/celebrity spellers as well.

Got to catch the Atlantis production last Sunday and I had a blast seeing it again. Geneva Cruz was one of the guest spellers that night and the Bee master had his way with her:

INTRODUCTION: "Ms. Cruz's mom once assured her that her modest hills would eventually grow to be smokey mountains."

WORD: "Paradise"

SENTENCE: "Paradise, help me make a stand. Paradise, take me by the hand."

The production was clean and fun, but something was still missing. The youth of the BlueRep cast and the intimate staging really brought charm to the older production. (More about that Here).

------------
Here are some of the old clips I saw in YouTube that first piqued my interest about the production.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Tonys
-Al Sharpton misspells "dengue".

Pandemonium
(Original Off-Broadway)
-Love the revolving bleachers and the chaos towards the end. They incorporate the guest spellers well too. The Atlantis version was just ok.

I Speak Six Languages
(Original Off-Broadway)
-I like the girl playing Marcy Park here, but Thea Tadiar (Atlantis) was great as well. The incorporation of the steps to "All the single ladies" was inspired, haha. I'll always remember Mian Dimacali's Marcy for BlueRep, though.

I'm Not That Smart (Broadway on Broadway, featuring Barrett Foa)
-Leaf Coneybear is my favorite character and is one I'd love to play if I acted. Couldn't find the Jesse Tyler Ferguson video anymore so this should do.

The I Love You Song
-The song from Spelling Bee that can make you cry. For me, this was something Atlantis nailed in their production. Carla Guevarra-Laforteza's performance was better than this one.

When the cast of Putnam County Spelling Bee does Spring Awakening

Here's something to tie up the current and the upcoming productions of Atlantis.

This is an old clip from the 2007 Gypsy of the Year. The event is the culmination of a year-long fund-raising competition between the casts/crews of the different Broadway productions. During this night, they usually perform parodies of a broadway production (sometimes, even in teams).

It's a piece by the cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with their own version of Spring Awakening's "The Bitch of Living", this time called "The Bitch of Aging".

The choreography matches the original and they end with the Gap ad of the Spring Awakening kids. Fun!

The Bitch of Aging (Lyrics off YouTube by user TinorialPeredhil)

God, I used to feel so young, man
Playing kids from sea to sea
And I got so damn excited
To play a kid in Spelling Bee
Thought [we had hit our big corner] playing kids here on Broadway
Then I saw Spring Awakening, and now I have to say

Those kids are real kids, man
Under twenty and below
How can I compete with that when I try and do my show
They shave their heads and wear carnations
I think that's unfair
Since I have to wear a wig because I'm losing all my hair

{It's the Bitch of Aging}
The bitch - just the bitch
[Those kids are so damn young]
Just the bitch, yeah
(It's the bitch of aging - we're not the young ones any more}
I went to college, studied theater, got my BMA degree
Now I'm well into my twenties; no Spring Awakening for me

Yeah they made us feel so old
But it really must be said:
Think how they must feel at Rent now
They might as well be dead.

It's the Bitch of Aging
{Bitch uh uh uh}
Those kids are so damn young
{Kids are so damn young}
Just the Bitch of Aging
Asking 'What went wrong?!'
Where the hell'd they find them?
Oh who knows?

We're the youngest in the cast, man
And it's really is bizarre

We're too old for Spring Awakening
But too young to rent a car

I'm not too old to be edgy
Yeah I would show both boobs

And I'd show my Vagina
It even comes with pubes

It's the Bitch of Aging
{It's the Bitch of Aging}
I'm already thirty three
{Thirty three}
I can't even play a kid now in my own show Spelling Bee
{It's the Bitch of Aging!}
Those kids are so young man!
Just wait 'til they're my age!
[And then those spring chickens are gonna take our jobs]
[God I'm old! I'm so old!]
[background lyrics]
They can't be gone.

And now we're closing so we're
Totally fucked!
